NMSU has been recognized as a top tier university for the ninth time in the last 10 years in the U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges for 2022 National Universities rankings. NMSU improved in several ranking categories this year. NMSU is tied for 227 for national universities, tied for 112 in top public schools and tied for 100 for top performers on social mobility. The rankings are based on outcomes, faculty resources, expert opinion, financial resources, student excellence and alumni giving.
NMSU was named one of Abound’s 2021 Top Grad School Programs. NMSU qualified based on factors that focus on the needs of non-traditional students such as flexible classes and services, affordable courses, a range of quality programs, and degrees that help students advance in their field. Abound selects the top 15 percent of institutions according to its holistic grading criteria and adjusts the cohort to have a more representative distribution of school locations, school sizes, religious affiliations, public schools, private schools and historically Black colleges and universities.
Doña Ana Community College student Ta’Juana Williams garnered a silver medal in extemporaneous speaking at the SkillsUSA Championships in June 2021. Held virtually this year, SkillsUSA Championships are a competitive event that showcases the best career and technical education students in the country. Williams, an education major, was one of five DACC students to compete at the state competition, which she won. Established in 1965, SkillsUSA is a nonprofit partnership of education and industry to strengthen the country’s skilled workforce. The SkillsUSA Championships showcased thousands of students competing in more than 100 occupational and leadership skill areas.
A team of NMSU engineering students won accolades for their design and prototype of the Smart Robot Bed, a device that can help elderly and bedridden people regain some sense of independence and help caregivers. Led by Electrical Engineering Associate Professor Wei Tang, team members Leonardo Escamilla, mechanical and electrical engineering dual major; Andrea Baca and Elayne Petrie, electrical engineering; Rogelio Hernandez, Connor Sitz and Maria Reynoso, mechanical and aerospace engineering; won third place in best engineering design, along with the teamwork award in the 2021 Excellence Engineering Capstone Showcase Competition. The virtual contest held in May 2021 was sponsored by the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Head Association.
