The Engineering Student Council at NMSU won the Best Large Council award at the 2023 National Association of Engineering Student Councils Engineering Leadership Summit held at the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in March 2023. The award recognizes the council’s outstanding efforts in promoting leadership, community service and academic excellence among engineering students.
The council is actively involved in community service, organizing volunteer events and outreach programs to promote STEM education among young students in the community. Through its partnership with local schools and nonprofit organizations, the council has been able to inspire the next generation of engineers and create a positive impact in the community.
In addition to its community service initiatives, the council also promotes academic excellence through its various academic and professional development programs. The council, through its organizations, hosts workshops, seminars and networking events to help students enhance their skills and connect with industry professionals. The Engineering Student Council plans to host the 2024 Summit in Las Cruces.
Several NMSU graduate programs are ranked in the top 200 among the 2024 Best Graduate Schools by U.S. News & World Report.
NMSU graduate programs ranked in the top 200 include: chemistry, computer science, earth sciences, economics, education, engineering, English, fine arts, part-time MBA, mathematics, physics, psychology, public affairs, public health, social work and speech-language pathology.
Best Graduate Schools are ranked according to their performance across a set of widely accepted indicators of excellence. U.S. News & World Report collects graduate school data annually and presents the most current figures on enrollment, job placement, faculty and other critical quality that help prospective students make informed decisions.
NMSU will receive nearly $1.7 million from a federal grant from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration’s “Connecting Minority Communities Pilot Program” to improve internet access for family housing on the Las Cruces campus and expand access for certain agricultural science centers in the NMSU system.
The two-year grant will improve broadband accessibility in the south campus family housing in Sutherland, Cervantes and Tom Fort Villages and extend internet access to the agricultural science center in Farmington. If funding is available, the agricultural science centers at Mora and Alcalde will be serviced.
NMSU is among three minority-serving institutions in New Mexico to receive a combined $5.2 million to increase internet coverage, speed and availability in their facilities.
Following the catastrophic wildfires that scorched more than 900,000 acres across New Mexico in 2022, the New Mexico Reforestation Center has received $8.5 million in state funding to address the state’s current and future reforestation.
The funding will support the development of the new center and the state’s revegetation needs. This regional center is expected to significantly increase reforestation capacity across the Southwest in the critical areas of seed collection and storage, nursery production and planting.
The founding NMRC partners include the New Mexico Department of Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources’ Forestry Division, New Mexico Highlands University, NMSU and the University of New Mexico. The NMRC will be designed and constructed to produce up to five million tree seedlings per year. Currently, seedling production capacity in New Mexico is at a maximum of 300,000 seedlings per year, which is far below the 150 million to 390 million needed to replant the more than one million burned acres across the state.
