PGA Golf Management team wins championship

NMSU’s PGA Golf Management team celebrated another Aggie victory at the 2022 PGA University Championship in Las Vegas, Nevada, in November 2022.

Team members Davis Chung, Matt Mansholt, Benny Opperman, Talon Payne, Nic Ziebro and coaches Pat Gavin ’87 ’91 and Josh Salmon ’09 ’21 brought home the gold for the fourth time.

“We are already setting our sights on repeating in fall 2023,” says Gavin, director of NMSU’s PGA Golf Management Program.

The team sticks together on the golf course, but they also share a connection in paying tribute to Gavin’s late son, Gage Gavin, who suddenly passed away in 2015.

“The team came together and won that year’s event in his memory and followed it up with a rare repeat in 2016,” Gavin says. “They continue to wear NMSU caps with a special Gage logo on the side. These students are class acts, and I love every one of them.”

The 2023 PGA University Championship will take place at Dancing Rabbit Golf Course at the Pearl River Resort in Philadelphia, Mississippi, in November 2023.
