After approximately a year and a half and 130 volunteers, the rock mural at the NMSU Golf Course was completed in April 2024. Longtime Las Cruces artist Kathy Morrow created the mosaic, which consists of 26 animals, the NMSU logo, a Zia design, double hearts and a rose for the tiger swallowtail butterfly. Rocks, roofing tiles and crushed glass from the Las Cruces Recycling Center were used in the public art project that spans more than half an acre. Morrow originally started doing her rock art close to Tortugas Dam. Due to dam expansion, her work had to be moved, and this project was relocated to the golf course and started in October 2022.
