A lifelong love of music and dedication to students has earned Las Cruces native Jennifer Rogers ’99 national recognition as one of the country’s top music educators.
Rogers, Las Cruces High School orchestra director and string content specialist for Las Cruces Public Schools, was recently named the New Mexico Music Educators Association Educator of the Year and received a 2025 National Federation of High School Associations Outstanding Music Educator Award.
“I am deeply honored to receive these awards, but the true reward is seeing my students grow as musicians and individuals,” Rogers says. “Las Cruces has always been my home, and it’s incredibly fulfilling to give back to the community that helped shape my own musical journey.”
Under Rogers’ leadership, the LCHS orchestra has flourished, while fostering a culture of excellence and inclusivity. She has worked to expand opportunities for students of all backgrounds, ensuring that music education remains accessible and impactful.
“I want my students to know that music is for everyone,” Rogers says. “No matter where they come from or what challenges they face, they have a place in this program, and they have a voice through music.”
Rogers believes that music education not only builds technical skill, but also instills confidence, discipline and a lifelong appreciation for the arts.
“Being involved in a musical ensemble connects students to a greater community. They build friendships, develop teamwork skills and find a place to belong.”
Rogers credits much of her success to the support of her mentors at NMSU and the vibrant music community in Las Cruces.
“I hope to instill in my students the same passion for music that was nurtured in me,” Rogers says. “Music has the power to connect and inspire, and I’m grateful to be part of that journey for so many young musicians.”
