Acosta recognized as NM history maker

From artists to entrepreneurs, women have played a vital role in New Mexico’s history since the 1600s. Their legacies, now told through more than 100 roadside markers, salute the leaders, visionaries and everyday heroes who continue to inspire.

The New Mexico Historic Women Marker Program also honors living women making a lasting impact across the state. In spring 2025, NMSU Foundation CEO Sylvia Y. Acosta ’10 was selected as one of eight history makers for inspiring her community, county and state.

Acosta was recognized at a ceremony in the New Mexico State Capitol for Women’s History Month in March 2025. Known for her advocacy for the underserved and commitment to student success, she has strengthened the NMSU Foundation, enhancing its impact, operations and university partnerships.

“I am honored to be recognized alongside the incredible women who have shaped New Mexico’s history,” Acosta says. “This is a tribute to education, advocacy and community, and I hope it will inspire future generations to lead with passion.”

Since 1935, New Mexico’s Official Scenic Historic Markers have celebrated our heritage, yet women’s contributions were long overlooked. That changed in 2006 with the launch of the Historic Women Marker initiative.
