After more than four decades as the “Voice of the Aggies,” Jack Nixon concluded his career in March 2025 with 45 years behind the mic at thousands of Aggie Athletic events. In August 2024, Nixon announced that the 2024-25 season would be his last in the radio booth broadcasting Aggie games.
“I felt like it was important for me to go out on top or in a situation where I was leaving with good feelings from everyone,” Nixon says. “It was something that was my decision, and I realized I had to do it, even though it will be difficult to do without calling play-by-play moving forward.”
In fall 2024, Nixon donated his collection of audio tapes to the NMSU Library’s Archives and Special Collections department. The tapes date back to 1976. Over the years, he broadcasted football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball games.
Whether it was fans, student-athletes or coaches and their staff, Nixon has felt the impact he’s made in his career.
“People have been very kind to me,” he says. “Some I didn’t know personally, but they knew of me or knew of my work. They have come forward and have been very complimentary.”
Nixon says he’s grateful to those who have believed in him consistently and appreciated the inclusivity of the teams and coaches he’s worked alongside. He feels indebted to many people in the Aggie Athletics Department.
“The consideration that people have shown me goes beyond riding on the team bus or other things,” he says. “To be included is part of what the teams are building and it’s so gratifying. When I started doing this kind of job, I just wanted a chance to do it. I just wanted to get a job after getting out of college doing play-by-play and grow to the next level. For me to be a part of this and to be accepted and acknowledged by people in town and by the people that I work with is such a wonderful blessing.”
In retirement, he plans to continue being involved in future projects that highlight the Las Cruces and NMSU communities.
