When Anita Maxwell Skipper ’96 stepped onto the court for NMSU in 1992, she began building a legacy that would define an era of Aggie women’s basketball. In June 2026, that legacy will be formally recognized with her induction into the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame, a fitting honor for one of the most decorated players in program history.
Regarded as arguably the greatest Aggie women’s basketball player, Skipper played from 1992-96, earning three Big West Conference Player of the Year honors and setting multiple school records, including 2,601 career points, a mark that still stands.
“I was shocked when I received the phone call,” she says. “It is a special recognition for me and my family, and I am proud to represent NMSU.”
The Cleveland Rockers selected Skipper with the 29th pick in the 1997 WNBA College Draft. She was inducted into the NM State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2002, recognizing her extraordinary impact on the program. While her accolades are historic, Skipper says the relationships with teammates remain her most treasured memories.
